Following a long delay, union cabinet minister Nitin Gadkari and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the Kanaka Durga flyover, in Vijayawada. The 2,6-km flyover in Vijayawada was designed to minimize the congestion of the traffic at an approximate cost of Rs 502 crore. The road begins in Kummaripalem and ends in the Municipal Park of Rajiv Gandhi, passing the Prakasam dam over the Canal and the Temple Road.
The foundation stones for 16 state road projects of 1.411 Km at Rs 15,592 Crore was also laid by Gadkari. He said the projects include the development of a six-lane circumference of Vijayawada and a bridge across Krishna River.
In 2014, the flyover was sanctioned and was scheduled to be completed by 2016. It was plagued by delays, however, in November 2019, officials said that the flyover will be ready by the end of January 2020. After missing many deadlines due to various factors, including lack of funds and lack of materials and machinery the flyover was eventually opened up to the public.
