Today, when searching for keywords which are getting majority views to our vizag articles, we found an interesting fact. Almost 20% of the searches are from ‘Bizag‘ keyword. Initially we thought people were pressing the adjacent button ‘B’ when pressing ‘V’ of Vizag. However, when we started checking the location of keyword traffic, almost all the traffic is coming from Bengal and Orissa states. Clearly they are mispronouncing and mistyping the city’s name and there is a big explaination for this.
The Bengali sound system does not have any labio-dental phones in its language inventory, hence the labio-dental ‘v’ is shifted to a labial sound ‘b’, or even ‘bh’ depending on the context and enviroment. ‘Virat’ will become ‘birat’ but ‘Sourav’ will become ‘Sourabh‘. Bengali native speakers who know English/ Hindi or any other language having the labio-dental sound, usually catches on the sound later and incorporate the same while speaking in Bengali, a result of second language influence, hence the ‘v’ ‘b’ interchange is much reduced now, since language keeps evolving, but its interesting to note the ‘b’ sound is still being used in google searches instead of ‘v’
Due to this reason Vizag is being called as ‘Bizag’ by the people of Bengal and few parts or Orissa. So, the next time you heard someone calling out the word ‘Bizag’, you know what it is .
